Healing the Little Girl Within the Mother

Day 6 – Learning to Forgive Yourself

Theme Scripture

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”

— Isaiah 43:18–19 (NIV)

Learning to Forgive Yourself

For many women, forgiving others is difficult.

Forgiving ourselves often feels impossible.

We replay old conversations.

We remember poor decisions.

We revisit relationships we wish had ended sooner.

We think about the opportunities we missed, the words we wish we had never spoken, the years we feel we wasted, and the ways we believe we failed ourselves or the people we love.

Even after receiving God’s forgiveness, we quietly continue carrying our own sentence.

We become both the judge and the prisoner.

If that describes you, I want you to know something today:

God never asked you to carry what Jesus already carried to the cross.

Why Is It So Hard to Forgive Ourselves?

Many of us believe that continuing to feel guilty somehow proves we are truly sorry.

We think that if we punish ourselves long enough, perhaps we can make up for the past.

But self-punishment never produces healing.

It only keeps us trapped.

Sometimes we hold ourselves to a higher standard than we hold anyone else.

If another woman shared your story, you would likely respond with compassion.

You would remind her that God loves her.

You would encourage her that her past does not define her.

Yet when it comes to your own life, you struggle to believe those same truths.

Why?

Because shame has convinced you that grace is for everyone else—but not for you.

That is a lie.

God’s Grace Is Bigger Than Your Biggest Regret

Isaiah 43 contains an invitation that many of us overlook.

God says:

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.”

Notice that He does not say your past never happened.

He simply tells you not to live there.

There is a difference.

Remembering allows us to learn.

Dwelling keeps us imprisoned.

Then comes one of the most hope-filled promises in Scripture:

“See, I am doing a new thing!”

God is always creating new beginnings.

He is not limited by your mistakes.

He is not surprised by your failures.

He specializes in redemption.

Stop Reading Finished Chapters

Imagine reading a novel but refusing to turn the page.

You stay in the same painful chapter over and over again.

You never discover how the story ends because you refuse to leave the chapter that hurt the most.

Many of us live this way spiritually.

We continue replaying one season of our lives while God is inviting us into the next chapter.

Your story is still unfolding.

The chapter that caused you the most pain is not the conclusion.

The Author is still writing.

Forgiveness Is an Act of Faith

Forgiving yourself is not pretending that your choices were perfect.

It is choosing to trust that Christ’s sacrifice is sufficient.

When Jesus declared, “It is finished,” He meant exactly that.

Your debt has been paid.

Your punishment has been carried.

Your forgiveness has been secured.

Choosing to forgive yourself is not minimizing sin.

It is magnifying God’s grace.

What If Your Story Helps Someone Else?

Many women wish they could erase parts of their lives.

But what if those very chapters become the reason someone else finds hope?

Your testimony is not powerful because your life was perfect.

It is powerful because God’s grace met you in your brokenness.

The enemy wants you to hide your story.

God often uses healed stories to bring healing to others.

Debbie’s Reflection

There have been moments when I found it easier to believe that God had forgiven me than to believe I could forgive myself.

I would replay old memories and wonder how different life might have been if I had made different decisions.

Over time, I realized I was living in yesterday while God was inviting me into today.

His grace gently reminded me that He is not asking me to erase my past—He is asking me to trust Him with it.

Every day I choose to release another piece of regret into His hands.

And every day He proves that His mercy truly is enough.

Reflection Questions

  1. What memory do I continue replaying that God is asking me to release?
  2. How has unforgiveness toward myself affected my relationship with God and others?
  3. What does Isaiah 43:18–19 teach me about God’s desire to lead me forward?
  4. What new beginning might God be inviting me to embrace today?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being a God of new beginnings.

Thank You that Your mercy is greater than my regrets and Your grace is sufficient for every failure I have carried.

Today I choose to stop dwelling on the chapters You have already redeemed.

Help me release every painful memory that keeps me trapped in shame.

Teach me to forgive myself because You have already forgiven me through Jesus Christ.

Give me the courage to believe that You are doing a new thing in my life.

Help me walk confidently into the future You have prepared for me, trusting that my story is still being written by Your loving hands.

Continue healing the little girl within me as You strengthen the woman You created me to become.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Today’s Affirmation

I AM FREE TO BEGIN AGAIN

My past no longer controls my future.

God’s mercy is new every morning.

I receive His forgiveness, and I choose to extend that same grace to myself.

I trust that God is doing a new thing in my life, and I walk forward with hope.

Journal Prompt

Think of one regret you continue carrying.

Write it down.

Now write a letter to yourself from the perspective of God’s grace.

What would your Heavenly Father lovingly say to you today?

Finish by writing this declaration across the page:

“I release my past into God’s hands and choose to walk forward in His grace.”

Tomorrow – Day 7

When You Feel Unworthy of Love

Theme Scripture: Ephesians 2:4–5 (NIV)

“But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ…”

Tomorrow we’ll explore the quiet belief that many wounded hearts carry: “I’m not worthy of love.” Together we’ll discover how God’s mercy and love redefine our value—not because of what we’ve done, but because of who He is.

Today’s Affirmation

I AM FREE TO BEGIN AGAIN

My past no longer controls my future.

God’s mercy is new every morning.

I receive His forgiveness, and I choose to extend that same grace to myself.
