Healing the Little Girl Within the Mother

Day 21 — Learning to Feel Safe in Peace

Theme Scripture

“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.”
— Psalm 4:8 (NIV)

Have you ever noticed that sometimes when life becomes quiet, your mind becomes louder?

Nothing is wrong. The children are okay. The house is peaceful. There is no immediate crisis. No bad news has arrived. No argument is happening. Nothing needs to be fixed at this exact moment.

And yet, instead of enjoying the peace, something inside you whispers:

“What am I forgetting?”
“Something doesn’t feel right.”
“Things have been going too well.”
“I wonder what’s going to happen next.”

For a woman who has lived through instability, disappointment, fear, trauma, or seasons when life changed without warning, peace can sometimes feel unfamiliar.

Your mind may want peace. Your heart may pray for peace. But your body may still be accustomed to preparing for danger.

Yesterday, on Day 20, we talked about releasing the need to always be strong. Today, we’re going to talk about another part of healing: learning that you don’t have to live as though something bad is always about to happen.

The little girl within you may have learned: “Stay alert. Pay attention. Don’t relax too much. Anything can happen.”

Those instincts may once have helped you cope with an unpredictable environment. But today, God is teaching the woman you have become something new:

You are allowed to experience peace without being afraid of losing it.

When Chaos Becomes Familiar

We usually think people naturally prefer peace over chaos. And consciously, most of us do. But our minds and bodies can become accustomed to whatever environment we experience repeatedly.

If childhood was unpredictable, unpredictability can begin to feel familiar. Maybe you never knew what mood someone would be in. Maybe there was arguing in the home. Maybe you had to watch someone’s facial expressions to determine whether it was safe to speak. Maybe something painful happened when you least expected it.

The little girl within you learned to pay attention. She listened. She watched. She anticipated. She prepared. She learned: “If I stay alert, maybe I can protect myself.”

That wasn’t foolish. It was adaptation. But what helped you survive yesterday can make it difficult to enjoy today.

Your Body May Remember What Your Mind Wants to Forget

Sometimes you know intellectually: “I’m safe right now.” But your body hasn’t received the message.

You may feel tense even when nothing is happening. You may have difficulty relaxing. You may constantly check things. You may overthink conversations. You may prepare for worst-case scenarios. You may have trouble sleeping because your mind becomes busiest when everything gets quiet.

Healing involves gently teaching yourself: “That was then. This is now.”

Peace Can Feel Suspicious When You Are Used to Survival

Have you ever had a really good day and suddenly thought: “Something bad is probably going to happen”?

Sometimes we become afraid to enjoy good moments because we think disappointment will hurt less if we remain prepared for it.

But constantly expecting pain doesn’t prevent pain. It only steals peace from moments that are actually peaceful.

You do not have to ruin today’s joy trying to emotionally prepare yourself for tomorrow’s hypothetical sorrow.

You Don’t Have to Create a Problem Because Things Are Quiet

Sometimes when chaos feels familiar, peace can feel almost boring. Without realizing it, you may begin searching for something to fix.

You start overthinking. You revisit an old argument. You worry about something months away. You assume someone’s quietness means they’re upset.

Healing means noticing when your mind begins searching for danger and gently saying: “Nothing is wrong right now.”

Not: Nothing will ever go wrong again. You cannot promise yourself that.

But you can say: Nothing is wrong right now. And right now is where you are living.

God’s Peace Doesn’t Require a Perfect Life

Psalm 4:8 says: “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.”

David didn’t write about peace because his entire life was easy. His life included conflict, danger, betrayal, enemies, uncertainty, and grief. Yet he learned to place his safety ultimately in God.

Biblical peace isn’t the promise that nothing difficult will ever happen. Biblical peace is confidence that whatever happens, God remains God.

Your peace doesn’t have to depend upon controlling every circumstance. It can rest in the character of the One who holds you.

You Are Not Responsible for Preventing Every Bad Thing

For someone who learned to survive through vigilance, control can feel like safety.

If I plan enough, watch closely enough, anticipate every possibility, keep everyone happy, and prepare for everything—maybe nothing bad will happen.

But that is an exhausting responsibility. And it is impossible.

There are things you can wisely prepare for. And then there are things you must place in God’s hands.

Peace begins when we recognize the difference.

Worry Is Not the Same as Preparation

Preparation says: “There is something I can reasonably do, so I will do it.”

Worry says: “I must mentally rehearse every possible negative outcome.”

Preparation takes action and eventually stops. Worry keeps circling.

You can be wise without living afraid. You can plan without obsessing. You can prepare without constantly expecting disaster.

Stop Borrowing Trouble From Tomorrow

Jesus said in Matthew 6:34: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” — NIV

How much of today’s peace have we sacrificed worrying about things that never happened?

Tomorrow will arrive when it arrives. God is giving you grace for today.

You don’t need tomorrow’s answers today. You need today’s grace today.

Peace Is Not Something You Have to Earn

Some women struggle to sit peacefully because peace feels like inactivity.

But peace is not laziness. Peace is not irresponsibility. Peace is not ignoring reality.

Sometimes peace is simply the decision to stop manufacturing emergencies where none exist.

You are allowed to sit in your home and say: “Thank You, God. Today is peaceful.” And enjoy it.

You Are Allowed to Enjoy Good Seasons

You are allowed to enjoy a peaceful marriage, a quiet home, children laughing, a meal around the table, a bill being paid, a good conversation, a successful day, a new opportunity, a good night’s sleep, a cup of coffee in silence, a prayer answered, a moment when nothing hurts, or a day when nobody needs rescuing.

You don’t have to immediately wonder: “How long will this last?”

You can simply say: “Thank You, Lord, for today.”

Stop Waiting for the Other Shoe to Drop

There is a phrase people sometimes use: “I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop.”

It means things seem fine, but you are expecting something bad to happen.

That mindset keeps your nervous system living in tomorrow’s imagined crisis.

If tomorrow brings difficulty, God will be there tomorrow. But if today brings peace, God is also here today.

Receive today’s gift.

Peace May Feel Uncomfortable Before It Feels Natural

Healing isn’t always instantly comfortable. Sometimes healthy things initially feel strange because they are unfamiliar.

A healthy boundary may feel mean. Receiving help may feel weak. Rest may feel lazy. Being loved may feel suspicious. And peace may feel unsafe.

That doesn’t mean the healthy thing is wrong. Sometimes it simply means: “I am learning something new.”

Give yourself time.

You Can Notice Fear Without Obeying It

Perhaps you’re sitting peacefully and suddenly anxiety appears: “What if something happens?”

You don’t have to argue with yourself for thirty minutes. Simply notice it: “I’m feeling afraid.”

Then ground yourself in truth: “I am safe in this moment. Nothing is happening right now. God is here. I don’t need to solve tomorrow tonight.”

You are not denying reality. You are returning to the present.

Let Your Home Become a Place Where Peace Is Normal

One beautiful part of healing is creating something different from what you experienced.

Prayer can live here. Respect can live here. Laughter can live here. Apologies can live here. Healthy boundaries can live here. Quiet can live here. Rest can live here. Safety can live here. Peace can live here.

You are not only decorating a house. You are helping create an emotional atmosphere.

And every peaceful pattern you establish says to the little girl within you: “We live differently now.”

Peace Doesn’t Mean There Will Never Be Conflict

A peaceful home is not a home where nobody disagrees.

Healthy families still have misunderstandings. People become frustrated. Children have difficult days. Spouses disagree. Plans change. Problems happen.

Peace is not the absence of every uncomfortable emotion. Peace is the presence of healthy ways to move through them.

You can disagree without cruelty. Correct without humiliation. Communicate without screaming. Apologize without losing dignity. Set boundaries without hatred. Forgive without pretending nothing happened.

Your Children Can Learn That Home Is Safe

One of the beautiful things about healing is that it can affect generations.

Your children can learn: Home is where I can talk. Home is where I can make mistakes and still be loved. Home is where we apologize. Home is where we pray. Home is where we rest. Home is where disagreements don’t mean love disappears. Home is where I am safe to be myself.

You may not have received all of that as a little girl. But through God’s grace, you can help build it now.

That is cycle-breaking.

Debbie’s Reflection

There were times in my life when peace wasn’t something I automatically trusted.

When you’ve lived through situations where life changed unexpectedly, you learn that things can happen without warning. So part of you stays prepared.

But God has been teaching me that I don’t have to spend every peaceful season preparing emotionally for another difficult one.

I’ve already lived through hard chapters. I don’t need to reread them every time life becomes quiet.

I can appreciate the home I’m building. I can enjoy cooking in my kitchen. I can laugh with my family. I can sit quietly. I can pray. I can enjoy an ordinary day. And I don’t have to apologize for enjoying it.

The little girl within me learned that life could change unexpectedly. But the woman God is healing is learning: Even if life changes, God doesn’t.

That is where my safety ultimately rests. Not in controlling everything. Not in predicting everything. Not in preventing every problem.

But in knowing: Whatever tomorrow brings, God will already be there.

So today, I am learning to enjoy today.

You Don’t Have to Keep Rehearsing the Past

Sometimes the danger isn’t happening anymore, but we continue replaying it.

Healing doesn’t mean pretending the past never happened. It means gradually refusing to let yesterday occupy every room of today.

When an old memory comes, you can acknowledge it: “Yes, that happened.”

And then remind yourself: “But I am here now.”

You survived that chapter. You don’t have to live inside it forever.

Peace Requires Surrender

Ultimately, peace requires something control cannot give us: trust.

Trust that God sees what you cannot. Trust that God knows what you don’t. Trust that God is working in places you cannot reach. Trust that you don’t need every answer today. Trust that when tomorrow comes, grace will come with it.

There will always be something you could worry about.

Peace comes when you decide: “God, I trust You with what I cannot control.”

Reflection Questions

1. When life becomes peaceful, do I allow myself to enjoy it, or do I start looking for something that might go wrong?
2. What experiences from my past taught me that I needed to stay alert or prepared for danger?
3. What is one situation I am currently worrying about that is not actually happening right now?
4. What would it look like for me to trust God with tomorrow and fully receive today’s peace?
5. What peaceful patterns am I creating in my home and family that are different from what I experienced growing up?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being my refuge, my protector, and my peace.

Thank You for carrying me through seasons when life felt uncertain and for protecting me in ways I may never fully understand.

Today I bring You the part of me that is still waiting for something to go wrong.

Heal the little girl within me who learned that she had to stay alert. Heal the part of me that learned to watch, anticipate, prepare, and protect herself because life did not always feel safe.

Thank You for helping her survive. But teach the woman I am becoming that she does not have to live every peaceful moment preparing for another crisis.

When my mind begins searching for danger, bring me back to the present.

Remind me: I am here. You are here. And in this moment, I can rest.

Father, help me release the things I cannot control.

I surrender tomorrow. I surrender the future. I surrender the people I love. I surrender the situations I cannot fix. I surrender the outcomes I cannot guarantee.

Give me wisdom for the things that require action and peace about the things that belong in Your hands.

Teach me to enjoy the good days You give me without fearing how long they will last.

Let laughter return without guilt. Let rest come without suspicion. Let joy come without fear. Let peace become familiar.

Bless my home. Let it become a place where love, prayer, grace, respect, forgiveness, laughter, and peace live freely.

Continue healing the little girl within me as You strengthen the woman You created me to become.

Tonight, help me lie down in peace. Tomorrow, help me rise with trust. And today, help me receive the gift of this moment.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Today’s Affirmation

I AM LEARNING TO FEEL SAFE IN PEACE

I do not have to live waiting for something bad to happen.

I release the need to anticipate every problem.

I release tomorrow into God’s hands.

I am safe in this present moment.

I am allowed to enjoy peaceful days.

I am allowed to laugh without fear.

I am allowed to rest without suspicion.

I am allowed to enjoy the life God is helping me build.

My past taught me to stay alert. God is teaching me to trust.

I cannot control everything that happens, but I know the One who holds my future.

Today, I choose peace. Today, I choose trust. Today, I receive God’s gift of rest.

Journal Prompt — Teaching My Heart That Peace Is Safe

At the top of today’s journal page, write: “What Does Peace Feel Like to Me?”

Complete these statements:

When everything is quiet, I usually feel…
When life is going well, I sometimes worry that…
Growing up, I learned to stay alert because…
The situation I am currently trying to control is…
If I trusted God with that situation, I could release…

Then create two columns: What My Past Taught Me and What God Is Teaching Me.

Under What My Past Taught Me, perhaps write: Stay alert. Don’t relax. Something could happen. Be prepared for the worst. Don’t trust good moments.

Under What God Is Teaching Me, write: I can live in the present. I can receive peace. I can enjoy good moments. I do not have to predict everything. I can prepare wisely without living afraid. God will be with me tomorrow just as He is with me today.

Then write: “Peace is not something I need to fear. I am learning to receive it as a gift from God.”

Finish by writing three peaceful things you are grateful for today.

Today’s Healing Challenge

Today, intentionally notice one peaceful moment.

It may be your morning coffee, a quiet kitchen, sunlight coming through the window, your children laughing, a peaceful conversation, cooking dinner, sitting beside your husband, listening to worship music, taking a shower, sitting outside, or going to bed.

When you notice the moment, resist the urge to think about what needs to happen next.

Stay there for a minute. Breathe. Look around. And quietly say: “Thank You, God. I receive this moment.”

If your mind begins searching for something to worry about, remind yourself: “Nothing is wrong right now. I do not have to leave today’s peace to visit tomorrow’s problems.”

A Truth to Carry With You Today

Little girl, you can put your guard down for a moment.

You don’t have to listen for footsteps. You don’t have to study everyone’s mood. You don’t have to figure out what might happen next. You don’t have to prepare yourself for disappointment before joy even arrives.

You did what you needed to do to survive. But look at you now. God has brought you through.

And the woman you have become is building something different.

A life where prayer lives. A home where laughter lives. Relationships where boundaries can exist. A heart where healing is happening. A future that does not have to look exactly like your past.

You cannot guarantee that life will never hurt again. None of us can.

But safety was never found in knowing the future. Your deepest security is found in knowing Who holds it.

So enjoy the quiet. Receive the laughter. Celebrate the good news. Drink the coffee while it’s hot. Cook the meal. Play the music. Love your family. Rest your body. Say the prayer. Enjoy the ordinary day.

And when your mind whispers: “But what if something happens?” answer: “Then God will meet me there too.”

Until then, you do not have to suffer tomorrow twice—once in your imagination and again if it ever comes.

Today has enough grace for today.

And today, there is peace.

You are allowed to receive it.

Tomorrow — Day 22

Learning to Receive Love Without Questioning It

Theme Scripture:

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!”
— 1 John 3:1 (NIV)

Tomorrow we will explore what happens when a little girl who experienced inconsistent, conditional, or painful versions of love becomes a woman who struggles to trust genuine love.

Sometimes healthy love arrives, and instead of simply receiving it, we question it.

Day 22 will be about learning that healthy love does not have to be chased, earned, tested, or constantly feared.

The little girl within you may have learned: “Love can disappear.”

But the woman God is healing is learning: “I am deeply loved by God, and I am learning to receive healthy love without fear.”
